The Significance of blood.
In our study last week, we studied the chapters of Leviticus that described the priesthood.
To night we continue our study of Leviticus by picking up at 17:10:
(Lev 17:10-16 NKJV) 'And whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people. {11} 'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.' {12} "Therefore I said to the children of Israel, 'No one among you shall eat blood, nor shall any stranger who dwells among you eat blood.'
Animals were to be bled before eaten
(Lev 17:13) "Whatever man of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell among you, who hunts and catches any animal or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust; (Lev 17:14) "for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, 'You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.'
Observations:
1. “The life is in the blood,” but “modern” medicine didn’t seem to know:
One famous American whose life could have been saved by a tracheotomy was President George Washington. At the end of the 18th century, however, the procedure was still considered too risky. In December of 1799, Washington lay in his bed at Mount Vernon, Virginia, suffering from a septic sore throat and struggling for air. The youngest of his three doctors, Elisha C. Dick, recommended that a tracheotomy be performed to create an unobstructed airway. He was vetoed by the other two physicians, who preferred more traditional treatment methods like bleeding. Washington died that night
2. The prohibition of drinking blood is carried into the New Testament.
(Acts 15:19-20 NKJV) "Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, {20} "but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.
“and from blood.” Recipes for “blood pudding” are on the internet. I started to copy one, but it frankly turned my stomach, but this is a teaching that is obviously still needed in certain parts of society.
“from things strangled,” would mean meat that was not properly bleed.
(Lev 17:15) "And every person who eats what died naturally or what was torn by beasts, whether he is a native of your own country or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. Then he shall be clean.
The laws are numerous in this section
Do not sacrifice your children to Molech,
but they did.
(Lev 18:21 NKJV) 'And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.
Homosexuality is forbidden.
(Lev 18:22 NKJV) 'You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.
Bestiality is forbidden.
(Lev 18:23-24 NIV) "'Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion. {24} "'Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.
God’s Welfare Program
(Lev 19:9-10 NKJV) 'When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. {10} 'And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God.
Look at some of the obvious aspects of the program:
1. Those in need actually did something for what they received – they had to gather it.
2. There was no harassment of those in need.
3. There were no forms to fill out
4. There were no administration fees. (Look at government programs today which cost enormous amounts of money to administer.)
5. There are no administrative decisions.
6. Initiative and work on the part of the poor is rewarded—“The early bird gets the worm.”
7. The cost was minimal—You just didn’t glean your fields: That was the loss.
8. Those in need were left with dignity.
Mediums and Familiar Spirits are forbidden
(Lev 19:31 NKJV) 'Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
(Lev 20:6-7 NKJV) 'And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. {7} 'Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.
(Deu 18:10-11 NKJV) "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, {11} "or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
Who are these people? What is so bad about them? Are they still a problem today?
Before we go further,
let’s put one more passage up for consideration.
(Isa 47:13-14 NKJV) You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you From what shall come upon you. {14} Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before!
So who are these people?
The names may overlap,
but I think we can list a few:
1. Magicians
2. Astrologers
3. Witches
4. A necromancer = one who talks to the dead, or calls up the dead.
5. A Charmer
Magicians, witches, sorcerers, and
fortune tellers, may all be closely related.
What did they do? Are they real?
Many people don’t think they are real.
I believe they are.
Let’s start with Pharaoh:
(Exo 7:11-12 NKJV) But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. {12} For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.
How can we deny that the rods became serpents?
I say that requires supernatural power, but from whom? I trust the answer is obvious: the devil! Hence the term: black magic.
I would also observe that their power is limited.
(Exo 8:18-19 NKJV) Now the magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man and beast.
(Exo 8:19) Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the LORD had said.
What about a “necromancer;”
one who talks to the dead, or calls up the dead
(1 Sam 28:7-20 NKJV) Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor."{8} So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, "Please conduct a seance for me, and bring up for me the one I shall name to you." {9} Then the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?" {10} And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing."
{11} Then the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" And he said, "Bring up Samuel for me." {12} When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!" {13} And the king said to her, "Do not be afraid. What did you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth." {14} So he said to her, "What is his form?" And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle." And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down. {15} Now Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul answered, "I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do." {16} Then Samuel said: "Why then do you ask me, seeing the LORD has departed from you and has become your enemy? {17}
"And the LORD has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.
{18} "Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. {19} "Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines." {20} Then immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, and was dreadfully afraid because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no food all day or all night.
So what can you say?
There was something here: She recognizes Saul whom she did not recognize earlier.
There is a message that is supposed to be from Samuel, and things happen as he prophesied.
(1 Chr 10:13-14 NKJV) So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. {14} But he did not inquire of the LORD; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
So what is the Message?
I believe that there is supernatural power here, but it is from the devil.
So what is the application?
Leave Harry Potter alone!
Leave Horoscopes alone!
Leave Fortune Tellers alone!
Leave Ouija boards alone!
Question: How was Saul helped?
He wasn’t!
He died, and many died with him.
What would have happened had he not consulted the witch? We’ll never know in this life, but one thing is certain, it could not have turned out worse than it did with the “help” of a witch.
God wants us to trust Him for guidance and direction.
