Revelation 8

The 7th Seal!

What was Chapter 7 all about?

It was the sealing of the 144,000

It followed the 6th Seal which sounded like the end of the world.

In chapter 7, there is one verse that is somewhat of a key!

(Rev 7:2-3 NKJV)  Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, {3} saying, "Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads."

till we have sealed—Then everything can begin to break lose, but nothing is to interfere with the sealing, and protecting process.

But What Is the 7th Seal?

(Rev 8:1 NKJV)  When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

What is the Significance of the Silence?

It is Silence Before God!

(Hab 2:20 NKJV)  But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him."

Ø            This shows His awesome power!

Ø            The earth—all people—are to keep silent out of reverence and respect!

Ø            He is about to do something awesome?

Silence is associated with the Day of the Lord!

Zephaniah 1:7:

Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD;

For the day of the LORD is at hand,

For the LORD has prepared a sacrifice;

He has invited His guests.

Does Silence in Heaven Conclude the Seven Seals?

*          Some say “Yes, that’s all there is.”

*          Some say, “No!  It is the beginning of what follows.”

*          I believe the second answer is correct.

What Time is it? – On God’s Clock!

Can we look at His Clock, or Calendar?

*                      His calendar has seven days in every week.

*                      His “Old Testament Calendar” had seven feasts.  What were they?

The first four feasts have been fulfilled!

1.        The Feast of the Passover – Jesus Christ.

(1 Cor 5:7 NKJV)  . . . For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

2.        The Feast of Unleavened Bread – The Memorial of Christ’s Sacrifice.

3.        The Feast of First Fruits – Christ Risen!

(1 Cor 15:22-23 NKJV)  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. {23} But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming.

4.        The Feast of Pentecost (Fiftieth Day)

The Church is Established.

The last three feasts are yet to be fulfilled!

5.        The Feast of Trumpets

6.        The Feast of the Day of Atonement

7.        The Feast of Tabernacles.

(Lev 23:24 NKJV)  "Speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

Our Study Continues with the Seven Trumpets of Revelation. (The 5th feast of the O.T.)

(Rev 8:2)  And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.

Why the Long Time Between the First Four Feasts and the Fifth One?

(Hosea 3:4-5 NKJV)  For the children of Israel shall abide many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, without ephod or teraphim. {5} Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days.

(Hosea 6:1-2 NKJV)  Come, and let us return to the LORD; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. {2} After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.

(2 Pet 3:8 NKJV)  But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Using that formula:  2 days = 2,000 years.

I take that to be an approximate time.

(Mat 25:13 NKJV)  "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

We cannot set the day nor the hour, but obviously Jesus meant for us to have some idea about when these things were about to happen.

(Luke 21:31 NKJV)  "So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.

Let us get back to the Seven Trumpets of Revelation – Prayers Are Heard!

(Rev 8:3-4 NKJV)  Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. {4} And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand.

Warnings are coming!  The birth pangs are beginning.

(Mat 24:7-8)  "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 "All these are the beginning of sorrows.

(Rev 8:5 NKJV)  Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.

(Luke 21:25-28 NKJV)  "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; {26} "men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. {27} "Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. {28} "Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."

(1 Th 5:2-3 NKJV)  For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. {3} For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

Returning to Revelation 8 – What Time is it?

Are we at the end of the world as we know it?

Are we in the great tribulation?

Are we in the wrath of God?

What follows sounds like the wrath of God.

(Rev 8:6 NKJV)  So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

(Rev 8:7 NKJV)  The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Earth would be pretty barren!  What would happen to livestock without grass?  Hard times!

(Rev 8:8)  Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. {9} And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Since this has never happened, it’s hard to estimate the effect this would have on the rest of the world.

(Rev 8:10) Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. {11} The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

{12} Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.

How do we interpret this?  Is a day only 16 hours long?  If so, how does this affect life?

     *        Would the remaining vegetation not have enough sunlight to survive?

*        Or would the earth become extremely cold because there is not enough sun to keep it warm?

*         It’s hard to say, other than it is obviously a serious disruption!

Early in Our Lesson we asked – What Time is it?

Are we at the end of the world as we know it?

Are we in the great tribulation?

Are we in the wrath of God?

Why does it matter?

It matters because God does not intend His wrath for us.

(Rom 2:5-11 NKJV)  But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, {6} who "will render to each one according to his deeds":

(Rom 2:7) eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; {8} but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness; indignation and wrath, {9} tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; {10} but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. {11} For there is no partiality with God.

Revelation 8 concludes with this statement:

{13} And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, "Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the To my Home Pageremaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!"
