Prophecy about Christ
For this lesson, we will again confine ourselves to the Old Testament
To quickly review part of lesson ONE.
The Old Testament has been divided into the following divisions:
|
Law |
5 books |
|
History |
12 books |
|
Poetry |
5 books |
|
Major Prophets |
5 books |
|
Minor Prophets |
12 books |
Jesus referred to basically these same divisions:
(Luke 24:44 NKJV) Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."
In this lesson, we want to look at things which Jesus said must be fulfilled. In other words:
He must be the seed of a woman who would bruise the head of the serpent
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(Gen 3:15 NKJV) And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."
He shall bruise your head, - Destroy him!
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Gal 4:4 NKJV) But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
(1 John 3:8b NKJV) For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. (Bruise his head.)
And you shall bruise His heel." – He caused Jesus suffering on the cross, but Jesus death was by no means final! He arose from the grave.
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(Gen 12:3 NKJV) [to Abraham, God said], “I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Gal 3:16 NKJV) Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is Christ.
(Mat 1:1 NKJV) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
He must be a descendant of Isaac
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(Gen 17:19 NKJV) Then God said: "No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.
There is at least one other passage that refers to Isaac: Gen 21:12
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Mat 1:2 NKJV) Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
Be descendant of Jacob
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(Gen 28:10 NKJV) Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. . . .13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: "I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; . . . (14) ". . . in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Mat 1:2 NKJV) Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
Be a descendant from the tribe of Judah
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(Gen 49:10 NKJV) The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Mat 1:2-3 NKJV) Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. {3} Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
Why does any of this matter?
It matters because God is selecting people through whom Christ will come.
Why pick Judah?
He had his bad side.
He promised he would give Tamar the younger brother of the son to whom she was married. She waited, but Judah did not make good on his promise, so she dressed up like a harlot, and Judah went in to her, and she became pregnant. (Genesis 38) Why put a man like that in the lineage of Christ?
The Bible doesn’t say, but I’ve always felt that I may know why. He pleaded to take Benjamin’s place when Joseph said he would put him in prison. That’s what Jesus did for us. He took our punishment.
The whole story is told in Genesis 44, but we won’t read it all, but we will read Judah’s concluding remarks:
(Gen 44:33-34 NKJV) "Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. {34} "For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me, lest perhaps I see the evil that would come upon my father?"
That’s it! That was all that Joseph could handle! His brothers had changed from when they sold him, and now he knew it!
(Gen 45:1-2 NKJV) Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, "Make everyone go out from me!" So no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. {2} And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it. {3} Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph; does my father still live?" But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence.
What a difference Judah made! From that moment, there was a total change for all!
Be a descendant of David and heir to his throne
Prophecy in the Old Testament
(2 Sam 7:12-13 NKJV) "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. {13} "He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Mat 1:1 NKJV) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: . . . (6) and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
He was to be born in Bethlehem
(Micah 5:2 NKJV) "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting."
(Mat 2:1 NKJV) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
Be anointed and eternal
(Psa 45:6-7 NKJV) Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. {7} You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.
Fulfillment in the New Testament
(Heb 1:8-12 NKJV) But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. {9} You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions."
We began our study with a statement by Jesus:
(Luke 24:44 NKJV) Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me."
Jesus obviously thought that Prophecy was important:
· By His fulfilling the prophecies, it should have assured all that He was the one to come.
· Prophecy shows that there is an all-knowing God.
· Prophecy should assure us of the reality of God, and the trustworthiness of the Bible.
