Politics and Religion:  Do we discuss them?  Do they mix?

by Harley Pinon

We've all heard it said, "Don't discuss politics or religion," or maybe:  "Don't discuss politics and religion."  Why is that?  Why are we told not to discuss politics and religion?  Let's consider that for a moment.  I truly believe that how we believe about God and how we live will determine what happens to us when we die.  The Title of this website is "Bible Study with Harley."  Not everyone agrees with everything I say, but some time back, I began posting different political issues on my homepage.  That drew a lot of criticism.  I received so much criticism for that that I backed down, but then I have reconsidered.  Did I do the right thing?

Today, we hear a lot about separation of church and state.  After studying the issue for a long time, I have come to some very firm convictions.  Before we talk about separation of church and state we must decide what we mean by that.  If we mean that we do not want any particular church to be the church of the state, then I agree we should separate church and state.

The Roman Catholic Church:  Isn't that a blending of church and government?  I think so, and I don't agree with that idea.

The Church of England:   Isn't that a blending of church and government?  I think so, and I don't agree with that idea either.

But in a broader sense, we must not separate our civil government and our religion.

That's what is happening when we take the Bible out of schools and the Ten Commandments off the walls of classrooms and courtrooms.

We have abortion legalized because the morality of the Bible is not influencing our judges to make morally correct decisions.

We have the acceptance of homosexuality because the influence of the Bible is being largely ignored or set aside by judges and policy makers.  Our founding fathers were religious men.  They never intended to form an atheistic nation.  We can dispute whether or not to discuss politics and religion as long as we wish or ignore it, but the fact remains that in America, there is an assault on our Christian principles and our Christian freedom.  I think we as Christians need to re-examine what the Bible says about the Christian and government.

Below, I have given some links to articles on this website concerning the Christian and his government.
