Our Mother’s
May 10, 2009
Introduction
Today is Mother’s Day, but it is a rather special Mother’s Day because Mother’s Day was on May 10th 45 years ago. It was on that day that Carolyn went into labor with our first born son, and Timothy Dean Pinon was born the following day at 1:08 p.m. I remember those hours of waiting, and the final hour or so as the cleaned him up and made him ready for me to see him. I was preparing myself for the shock because I was looking at the other babies. They were all pretty ugly, so I was trying to prepare myself. Finally, they brought out the most beautiful baby I had seen all day: All 9 pounds of our beautiful son.
Carolyn’s screams during labor were over. Timothy was okay, and a new day began in our lives. Life would never be the same again. We were parents, and now we are grandparents and had our four older grandchildren with us Friday evening.
Motherhood and Mothers’ Day: There is just something special about a mother. Abraham Lincoln said, “I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.” He also said, "No one is poor who had a godly mother."
Body
I. The blessing of godly mothers.
A. Timothy was blessed with a godly mother and grandmother.
(2 Tim 1:5 NKJV) when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
B. The hand that rocks the cradle.
The hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.
By William Ross Wallace
The poem was first published in 1865
Blessings on the hand of women!
Angels guard its strength and grace,
In the palace, cottage, hovel,
Oh, no matter where the place;
Would that never storms assailed it,
Rainbows ever gently curled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Infancy's the tender fountain,
Power may with beauty flow,
Mother's first to guide the streamlets,
From them souls unresting grow--
Grow on for the good or evil,
Sunshine streamed or evil hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Woman, how divine your mission
Here upon our natal sod!
Keep, oh, keep the young heart open
Always to the breath of God!
All true trophies of the ages
Are from mother-love impearled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
Blessings on the hand of women!
Fathers, sons, and daughters cry,
And the sacred song is mingled
With the worship in the sky--
Mingles where no tempest darkens,
Rainbows evermore are hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.
C. The tremendous influence of mothers.
1. The world does not emphasize the importance of motherhood.
a. Betsy Wetsy dolls have been replaced with Barbie dolls
Betsy Wetsy was a doll originally issued by the Ideal Toy Company of New York in 1934.[1] Named for the daughter of Abraham Katz, the head of the company, the doll's special feature was [wetting] after a fluid was poured into her open mouth.[1] The doll was made in several sizes in the 1940s[1] and saw a spike in populairty in the 1950s.[1]
Betsy Wetsy was produced with either molded hair or brown, blond, or red plugged hair. A layette, baby bottles, a plastic bath tub, and other accessories were available.
A made-in-China version was issued in the late 1980s by Ideal to boost sales, but the doll never reached the success of the original. Betsy Wetsy was one of the first major dolls to be produced in black versions.[1]
In 2003, the Toy Industry Association named Betsy Wetsy to its Century of Toys List, a roll call commemorating the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the 20th century.[2] from Wikipedia
b. Too many young ladies have aborted their first born to live with many regrets.
c. Sexual activity has been glamorized while personal responsibility and purity have been largely ignored.
d. The Feminists have advocated a career over motherhood.
2. Mothers are a great influence in the church.
a. They do a tremendous job of teaching our children.
b. Paul gave older women another assignment.
(Titus 2:3-5 NKJV) the older women likewise, . . . {4} that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, {5} to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
II. What does the Bible say about honoring mothers?
A. It is the fifth commandment.
(Exo 20:12 NKJV) "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
1. It is fifth commandment, but first of the commandments that deal with our relationships to our fellow man and the first with a specific blessing.
2. It is elaborated upon in the New Testament.
B. It is the first commandment with promise.
(Eph 6:1-3 NKJV) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. {2} "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with promise: {3} "that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth."
C. Jesus gave special emphasis to this commandment.
(Mat 15:3-6 NKJV) He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? {4} "For God commanded, saying, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.' {5} "But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God"; {6} 'then he need not honor his father or mother.' Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.
1. This honoring is clearly more than a card or a few special gifts.
2. It clearly indicates taking care of aging parents.
3. Once again, government has often clouded the issue of who is responsible and who can best care for the elderly.
III. What about motherhood?
A. Motherhood is God’s plan from the beginning.
(Gen 1:27-28 NKJV) So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. {28} Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
1. The atheists of our nation are more concerned about “Mother earth” than they are about the lives of unborn babies.
2. Once again, the Bible states what is happening in our nation today.
(Rom 1:22-25 NKJV) Professing to be wise, they became fools, . . .{24} Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, {25} who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
B. What about motherhood for us today?
1. We need to honor our mothers today and every day.
2. We need to honor the laws of God rather than the whims of ungodly men.
Conclusion
I. Above all, we are to honor God.
II. Have we honored Him with our obedience and with our daily lives?
