Our God is an Awesome God

July 3, 2005

Introduction

How do you describe God?  God is beyond description, but that is not an excuse for saying nothing.  As we consider our heavenly Father this morning, we want to think in terms of the awesomeness of God.  Some of the new praise songs deal with the awesomeness of God, and this morning we want to look at the awesomeness of God.

Body

  I.  Consider experiences with the awesomeness of  God.

A.  Consider Jacob’s experience with the awesomeness of  God.

1.      When Jacob was fleeing from his brother Esau, God met him on the way.

(Gen 28:15-19 NKJV)  ""Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you." {16} Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." {17} And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!" {18} Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. {19} And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously."

2.      God reminded Jacob that He was the God of Bethel.

(Gen 31:13 NKJV)  'I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.'"

a.       'I am the God of Bethel I am the One who met you when you were down and I picked up.

b.      “Where you anointed the pillar” Where you wanted to show your worship of me.

c.       “Where you made a vow to Me” Promises you made when you were in trouble.  Now it’s time to pay up what you promised.

3.      There came the time when God told Jacob it was time to go back to Bethel.

(Gen 35:1 NKJV)  Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother."

a.       Sometimes we need to get back to places where we were close to God.

b.      God wanted his worship and his gifts: make an altar there to God

c.       He needed to remember the difficult days: when you fled from the face of Esau your brother."

4.      There are times when we need to get back to God.

a.       Tomorrow is the 4th of July.  We need to remember how great our freedoms are, and the price that has been paid for our freedom.

b.      We need to also remember our freedoms in Chirst.

c.       It may be time for us to return to our own “Bethel,” where ever, or what ever that may be for us.

B.  Remember Moses experience with the awesomeness of God.

(Exo 3:5 NKJV)  "Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.""

1.      It would take an awesome God to do what He was about to do.

2.      God wanted Moses to acknowledge Him as an awesome God, even before he saw some of the awesome things that God would do.

II.  God said that He would do awesome things.

(Exo 34:10 NKJV)  "And He said: "Behold, I make a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you."

A.  Moses reminded Israel to take comfort in the awesomeness of God.

(Deu 7:21 NKJV)  ""You shall not be terrified of them; for the LORD your God, the great and awesome God, is among you."

III.  God is one Who expects us to surrender to Him.

(Deu 10:16-17 NKJV)  ""Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer. {17} "For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe."

A.   We are to honor Him and acknowledge His greatness.

(Deu 10:21 NKJV)  ""He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen."

(Psa 47:2 NKJV)  "For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth."

(Psa 66:3 NKJV)  "Say to God, "How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall submit themselves to You."

(Psa 66:5 NKJV)  "Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men."

(Psa 99:3 NKJV)  "Let them praise Your great and awesome name; He is holy."

B.  Daniel was one who did honor and acknowledge His greatness.

(Dan 9:4 NKJV)  "And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments,"

C.  Nehemiah was one who also honored and acknowledged His greatness.

1.  In his prayers to God.

(Neh 1:5 NKJV)  "And I said: "I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments,"

2.  In his expression of faith in God to others who needed faith.

(Neh 4:14 NKJV)  "And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.""

IV.  Jesus reminded us to remember the glory and the awesomeness of God.

Matt 6:9  "In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.   (10)  Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Conclusion

Our God is an awesome God!  That means:

·        We need to address Him in honor and reverence

·        We need to encourage others to trust in Him.

·        We need to bow to Him in honor and obedience.

·        We need to worship Him in a way that shows our adoration.
