Lectureships

Carolyn and I enjoy attending Lectureships when we can.

Here are some thoughts that I printed in our bulletin:

We go to two different varieties of “Lectureships.”  The true lectureships that we attend are at Abilene Christian University, and Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.  The other “lectureship” that we attend is not called a lectureship, it is called the Soul Winning Workshop and is held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the State Fair grounds.  The format is similar.

The schedule runs something like this:

In the morning, there are two classes, and you have multiple classes to choose from.  Sometimes there may be as many as 20 to choose from.  There is also a “Keynote speaker.”  This is structured pretty much like a church service: Songs, prayer, announcements, speaker—no invitation song.

The afternoon is similar except that in the afternoon, Harding has a panel discussion where the audience submits questions on cards, and the Bible faculty answers them.  We always enjoy this part very much.

The evening has another “Keynote speaker” with songs, prayers, and announcements.  Other events will follow.  At Harding, it’s called the fire side chat.  In all, the day starts at about 8:30 unless you go to a breakfast meeting.  The day will end about 9:30, so it is a long day.  Carolyn and I have grown older while attending lectureships, and our tiring bodies are no longer up to the 13 hour day schedule, so we now turn in before the last event of the day.  We think lectureships are great if you can make it.

            The Cost:

The lectureship is free.  Donations are taken for various things, but there is no pressure to give.

There are also lunches and meals.  These are usually for groups, or by groups.  There is an elders and preachers dinner at Harding.  There is a lunch by the African Hospital group.  These are usually free at Harding.

It is also a great time of fellowship.  The only real cost is your motel, travel, and meals, at least this is true for those we have attended.  I assume it is probably true for the others as well.  We enjoy it and come away uplifted.  If you have questions, go to the websites to check it out.
