Isaiah Part 2

As we continue our study of Isaiah, we want to pick up a thought we introduced earlier:

Not all prophecy was fulfilled when Christ died on the cross.

The Day of the LORD:  What and When?

·       19 verses in the Old Testament refer to “the Day of the Lord.”

·       4 of these verses are in the book of Isaiah, including the first reference.

·       In the New Testament, there are 5 verses that refer to the Day of the Lord.

·       If this is the same “Day of the Lord,” it clearly was not fulfilled with the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Is the Day of the Lord something you want?

(Amos 5:16-20 NKJV)  Therefore the LORD God of hosts, the Lord, says this: "There shall be wailing in all streets, And they shall say in all the highways, 'Alas! Alas!' They shall call the farmer to mourning, And skillful lamenters to wailing. {17} In all vineyards there shall be wailing, For I will pass through you," Says the LORD. {18} Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! For what good is the day of the LORD to you? It will be darkness, and not light. {19} It will be as though a man fled from a lion, And a bear met him! Or as though he went into the house, Leaned his hand on the wall, And a serpent bit him! {20} Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?

Not a Good Day – if you aren’t ready!

Our second question was when?

One thing that makes prophecy tough is the fact that sometimes there are two fulfillments of the same prophecy.  I think that may be true in this case.  As we read on, it seems this is speaking of the Assyrian captivity!

(Amos 5:27 NKJV)  Therefore I will send you into captivity beyond Damascus," Says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

But back to the very first reference:

(Isa 2:10-12 NKJV)  Enter into the rock, and hide in the dust, From the terror of the LORD And the glory of His majesty. 11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, And the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. 12 For the day of the LORD of hosts Shall come upon everything proud and lofty, Upon everything lifted up; And it shall be brought low;

How will man respond to the Day of the Lord?

(Isa 2:19 NKJV)  They shall go into the holes of the rocks, And into the caves of the earth, From the terror of the LORD And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily.

2 Thoughts to Consider!

·       Revelation 6:12-17

·       Shaking the earth mightily!

(Rev 6:12-17 NKJV)  I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. {13} And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. {14} Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. {15} And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, {16} and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! {17} "For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

·       Men hide in rock & holes!  It reminds me of Saddam Hussein.

·       The earth shakes – mightily!

More bad new for the unprepared!

(Isa 13:6-11)  Wail, for the day of the LORD is at hand! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. {7} Therefore all hands will be limp, Every man's heart will melt, {8} And they will be afraid. Pangs and sorrows will take hold of them; They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth; They will be amazed at one another; Their faces will be like flames. 9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, Cruel, with both wrath and fierce anger, To lay the land desolate; And He will destroy its sinners from it. {10} For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine. {11} "I will punish the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will halt the arrogance of the proud, And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Just one time the day of the Lord refers to their day of worship (the Sabbath) in the Old Test.

(Isa 58:13 NKJV)  "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the LORD honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words,

We have now looked at all four passages in Isaiah that use the expression, “day of the Lord.”

What about the shaking of the earth?

(Isa 2:21 NKJV)  To go into the clefts of the rocks, And into the crags of the rugged rocks, From the terror of the LORD And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily.

God will make a difference for His people.

(Joel 3:16 NKJV)  The LORD also will roar from Zion,1 And utter His voice from Jerusalem; The heavens and earth will shake; But the LORD will be a shelter for His people, And the strength of the children of Israel.

1Zion is just another name for Jerusalem – not heaven.

A shaking that is yet to be!

(Hag 2:6-7 NKJV)  "For thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; {7} 'and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.

A shaking that we know is yet to be because it is repeated in Hebrews!

(Heb 12:26-28 NKJV)  whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven."

A further explanation:

(Heb 12:27) Now this, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain. {28} Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom1 which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

1This is future tense.  We are in the kingdom now, but there is a greater glory to come -- “since we are receiving a kingdom.”

This is clearly a reference to a phase of the kingdom that has not yet come.  It is  “a kingdom which cannot be shaken.”

The Possibilities:

1. Has this passage been fulfilled?

2. Is it too hard to understand what it means?

3. Will God just ignore it?

(Hag 2:6-7 NKJV)  "For thus says the LORD of hosts: 'Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; {7} 'and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.

Has this passage been fulfilled?

I don’t think so.  When was the greater glory and where is Israel’s peace today?

(Hag 2:9 NKJV)  'The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts. 'And in this place I will give peace,' says the LORD of hosts."

Is it too hard to understand what it means?

I don’t think so. We may not fully understand it, but I think we know it hasn’t been fulfilled.

Will God ignore it?  No!

(Luke 21:33 NKJV)  "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Our entrance into the everlasting kingdom is referred to as future by Peter.

(2 Pet 1:11-12 NKJV)  for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. {12} For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.

There’s a Great Day Coming, but it will only be great if we are ready.

Are you ready?
