The Idol of Covetousness Inspired by Becky Rene's Lesson on Covetousness
Covetousness is so with us! It's a very bad disposition. So what does it mean to covet? What causes such a condition? It started way back in Eden When Adam and Eve met the "Snake" Who tempted and turned them from God; It was more than just a mistake!
At the heart of this terrible sin, Is just what we're talking about, 'Twas covetousness brought sin in And turned men from faith unto doubt. In doubting that God had been fair They reached for something not theirs Which brought to mankind much despair, Because greed is a sin that ensnares.
This greed is something so hungry It eats up our thoughts and desires. It's the thing for which we are living, And feeding it stokes up the fires. Satisfying the need of this beast Will keep us so occupied That we'll keep our hearts from the Lord, As we feed the monster inside.
So what can be done to destroy The beast that forever is there Seeking to take our lives over, When, down deep, we know to beware Those things that now focus attention On indulging our own selfish whims Which constantly blind us to others Whose lives are so hopelessly grim.
What shall we do with this idol, This beast that has taken God's place? We're consumed with its care and feeding, No time for seeking God's face, No time for gathering to worship, No time for uplifting God's church, No time for reading the Bible, No care that God's name we besmirch.
Couldn't we start to subdue it By turning our eyes to a view That takes in God's vista of life, While bidding our self-god: "Adieu"? So seeking to reach out to others, If we put God's will in our sight, We'll no longer focus on self-love, But see things in a new light.
So, therefore, renewing our vision And doing what pleases the Lord, Our hearts and lives will be happy Following what's written in the word. God knows that we want to be happy; His plan is the way that is true For making a life that's now better, And one for eternity, too. Carolyn Irene Pinon
