He is the God of the Bible

by Harley Pinon

On my page, "Why I believe in God," I listed John Clayton's website.  The reason I did that is because John tells the reasons he left atheism.  One of the statements he makes on his web page is that he read the Bible through four times in order to write a book which I think he planned to call, "All the stupid things the Bible says."  After reading the Bible through four times, his notebook was empty, and John went on to become a Christian.

King David, the Psalmist said,  "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psa 119:105 KJV).  Harry Rimmer wrote a book entitled, That Lawsuit Against the Bible Mr. Rimmer was misquoted.  He was taken to court by a man who said Mr. Rimmer had promised a $1,000 to anyone who could find a contradiction in the Bible.  Even though Mr. Rimmer had not said that, the man lost his court case.

J. B. Phillips has written a book called The Ring of Truth.  In his book, which is in defense of the Bible, he basically says that if you will simply read the Bible, you will see that it has "the ring of truth."

During the summer of the early 1970's I came across a Guidepost magazine as we were traveling.  The cover story struck me.  It was a about a young Russian boy who worked for the Russian government to break up secret meeting of the church in Russia.  He told of how he beat of a beautiful young girl and literally threw her out of the building, but she was back at the next meeting.  He told of an old lady that he heard praying "for this young man."  He told of stuffing in his pocket some of the hand written scriptures that he took from them to take to their headquarters to burn them in the stove, but one night he keep what he was supposed to burn.  When he was back in the privacy of his quarters, he read what he had taken, and it was the account of the prodigal son.  He said the strangest sensation came over him as he knew that this was an incredible story.  In all his life he had heard nothing like it.  He was high up in the youth league of Russia and he began to plan.  He made arrangements to get on a Russian trawler that was headed for the United States and Canada.  As he came close to the shore of Canada, he jumped ship and swam to shore.  He almost died in the process, but he made it.  He literally gave up everything for his new found faith in God.  What did it?  He said he wasn't sure.  Was it the girl who kept coming back to the church meetings?  Was it the old woman praying for him? or Was it that story of the prodigal son.  One thing for sure, only a scrap of the gospel of Luke made a profound impression on his life.

James says,  "But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does." (James 1:25 NKJV).  The point I'm making is that the Bible is like a mirror.  We see ourselves in it.  Or maybe this verse is more to the point.  The Hebrew writer says, "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Heb 4:12 NKJV)

Whether it's John Clayton, J. B. Phillips, the young Russian, or whoever.  I don't believe any honest soul can read the Bible through carefully and not be impressed.  Obviously some have pushed it away.  King Agrippa was one of many.  I believe the Bible is a tremendous testimony to the existence of God.  The Bible itself makes no argument for the existence of God.  It assumes the existence of God.  Paul says, "For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." (1 Cor 1:21 NKJV)
