The Gospel

Introduction

For the past three Sundays, I used have used (Luke 4:18-19) and Isaiah 61:1-2 as somewhat of a beginning point, for our thoughts.  The first two weeks, we focused out attention on “the day of vengeance of our God;” as stated so clearly in Isaiah 61:2

Jesus was quoting Isaiah 61:1-2, as He said: "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; {19} To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." (Luke 4:18-19 NKJV)   Last Sunday we focused our attention on ways that Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted.  We mentioned briefly, the gospel.

We might ask, are these statements in the correct order?  Should Jesus have first mentioned the brokenhearted, and then preaching the gospel to the poor?  That’s a good question.  I think perhaps we fail to truly understand the gospel.

In the Garden of Eden, we have the devil.  We need to look at Jesus description of the devil.  To the Jews, He said,  "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. {45} "But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.”  (John 8:44-45 NKJV)

What was the big lie that he told in the garden?  Let’s read the story:  (Gen 3:1-5 NKJV)  Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" {2} And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; {3} "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'" {4} Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. {5} "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

This is the lie that Satan has continued to tell for 6,000 years, and he has the multitudes believing his lie.  This will continue to be true until one day when it will be too late make things right and reap the benefit.  As we have been studying this passage, we started with the end of the world.  Many passages I did not get to, but there will come a day when those who believed the lie will realize they have been lied to.

(Rev 6:12-17 NKJV)  I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. {13} And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. {14} Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. {15} And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, {16} and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! {17} "For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

Body

I.       What is the gospel?

  1. The definition of the original word actually means, “The good news”

εὐαγγελίζω   euaggelizō

Thayer Definition:

1) to bring good news, to announce glad tidings

1a) used in the OT of any kind of good news

1a1) of the joyful tidings of God’s kindness, in particular, of the Messianic blessings

1b) in the NT used especially of the glad tidings of the coming kingdom of God, and of the salvation to be obtained in it through Christ, and of what relates to this salvation

1c) glad tidings are brought to one, one has glad tidings proclaimed to him

1d) to proclaim glad tidings

1d1) instruct (men) concerning the things that pertain to Christian salvation

1.      How is it to be considered as good news?

a.       It is the beginning of the restoration process.

b.      Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden.

(Gen 3:22-24 NKJV)  Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"; {23} therefore the LORD God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. {24} So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

2.      The “Good News” is that now we can draw near to God.

(Eph 2:13-19 NKJV)  But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. {14} For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, {15} having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, {16} and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. {17} And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. {18} For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. {19} Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

II.    What does the Bible say about the gospel?

  1. There is the definition.

(1 Cor 15:1-4 NKJV)  Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, {2} by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain. {3} For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, {4} and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

  1. There is our response to the gospel.—Obey the gospel.

(2 Th 1:7-9 NKJV)  and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, {8} in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. {9} These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

  1. We obey the gospel in baptism.

(Acts 2:36-38 NKJV)  "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." {37} Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" {38} Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1.      "Repent,  [die to your life of sin]

2.      Repentance is more than sorrow for sin.

(2 Cor 7:10 NKJV)  For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

3.      To truly repent is to change our lives.

(Acts 3:19 NKJV)  "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

4.      We are to be baptized into Christ.

(Rom 6:1-4 NKJV)  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? {2} Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? {3} Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? {4} Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

III. How then do we obey the gospel?

  1. What is the gospel again?

(1 Cor 15:1-4 NKJV)  Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, {2} by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you; unless you believed in vain. {3} For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, {4} and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

  1. Baptism is our way of obeying the gospel.

1.      We die to sin through repentance.

2.      We are buried with Him in baptism

3.      We are raised to walk in newness of life.

  1. It is the good news.

1.      In the end, we will be saved.

2.      In the meantime we have fellowship with God, and with one another.

3.      It is the blessed hope.

(Titus 2:11-15 NKJV)  For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, {12} teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, {13} looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, {14} who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. {15} Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.

Conclusion

The gospel is the good news!

It is our hope, both now and in the world to come
