Dressing Modestly (for girls)

by Becky Rene

Introduction

1. I am doing this lesson today about dressing modestly because you girls are not dressing modestly.

       2. Maybe it is because you do not realize it so we will look at what the Bible says about it.

I. The Bible Says we Must Dress Modestly

A. This is what the Bible says…

"Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments," (1 Timothy 2:9 NASBR)

1. It says we should wear “proper clothing.” So what does that mean?

2. Well, my daddy says that it means we should “dress in a manner that is consistent with being a child of God.” So what does that mean?

B. “Dressing in a manner that is consistent with being a child of God” – What this means:

a. Do you remember when we saw those girls all wearing gothic clothes? So why were they dressed like that? Because gothic is what they are and so they dressed up in gothic clothes.

b. Now you know how prostitutes dress don’t you? So why do they dress like that? Because they want to sell themselves and make money and so they dress like that to attract bad men.

c. Look at Adam and Eve, they were naked and they did not mind did they (Genesis 2.25)? But what happened when their minds changed? They put on aprons didn’t they (Genesis 3.6-7)?

d. So do you see now…you always dress because of what you are in your mind. Well, we are Christians so we should dress like a Christian.

II. So, Now That We Understand That, How Should A Christian Woman Dress?

A. The Bible says we should dress “modestly and discretely” (1 Timothy 2:9). Let us look at what these words mean:

1. Modesty is “Shamefastness is that modesty which is 'fast' or rooted in the character” – From Vine’s Dictionary of New Testament Words (I have that on my e-Sword program).

a. So that means that if you have the right mind about dressing properly and you do not dress properly then you will feel embarrassed about it.

b. So if you have the right mind then you will feel embarrassed if you are wearing a short skirt or a dress because your mind tells you it is too short and you are dressing just like one of those girls we see in the mall.

2. Discretely means “moderation of the desires and passions.” – That is what Albert Barnes says (That is from a commentary).

a. So that means not wearing clothes that cover you right up all over and make you look weird and not wearing clothes that hardly cover you at all.

b. So you must not wear a T-shirt that is miles too big and baggy and goes down to the floor because that would look weird, and you must not wear a T-shirt that is low cut and short and lets everyone see your belly, that is very worldly and you should be ashamed of that.

B. You girls worry so much about the clothes you wear but there are other clothes we should be even more worried about wearing…look what the Bible says "But rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness" (1 Timothy 2:10 NASBR).

1. It says that godly woman will adorn themselves with good works.

2. So do not worry about what clothes you wear but worry about what good works you will do every day.

Conclusion

1. Now some of you girls are wearing clothes just like those bad girls we see when we go to the mall aren’t you?

a. They wear those clothes because they have worldly minds, so those are the clothes they wear.

b. Now if you have a godly mind then how come you are wearing bad girl’s clothes? I think you need to change your mind don’t you?

2. So now look at the way those bad girls dress and change your mind from worldly to godly and you will not wear those clothes anymore, and you will even be embarrassed to put those clothes on again.

3. Now I said we have to adorn ourselves with good works so we will do a lesson about good works next time.

That is all. You can ask questions now if you want.
