Christmas

Introduction

1. We have just had Thanksgiving and we had a nice time with our families and we had a lot of fun didn’t we?

2. Well, there is another holiday coming soon and that is Christmas, and that is what we are going to talk about today.

Body

I. What is Christmas all About?

A. Now lots of people say that Christmas is celebrating Jesus’ birthday and that is why there are Christmas carols, sending Christmas cards, and giving each other presents. And people even go to church so they can celebrate Jesus’ birthday.

B. You also have churches and schools that have a Christmas play. When I was a little girl (even littler than I am now), my mom took me to church (It was a Baptist church and that was before we was baptised) at Christmas and they had a play all about the birth of Jesus. But I will say some more about that in a minute.

II. Is Christmas Jesus’ Birthday?

A. Now I have been reading my Bible and I read all about the birth of Jesus. Now let us read about it…

1. Matthew 2:1-23.

2. Luke 2:1-40.

B. What do those stories say?

1. Now, can anyone see where it says that we must celebrate Jesus’ birthday? You cannot see that because it does not say it.

2. Can anyone see where it says that Jesus was born on December 25th? You cannot find it because it does not tell us that.

C. So…

1. If it does not tell us to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, should we be doing that?

2. How can we celebrate it if the Bible does not tell us when Jesus was born?

III. The Nativity

A. Now I told you just now that my mom took me to church and we saw a play all about Jesus’ birth.

1. There was a stable with Joseph and Mary and the baby Jesus’ in a crib (it was a real baby as well but it was a girl! That is funny isn’t it?).

2. And they had three Shepherds and three wise men all worshipping Jesus.

B. But now read what your Bible says about that:

1. Well, Luke does say that Jesus was born in a stable and that some Shepherds came to see Him. It does not say how many shepherds there were though. So that was when Jesus was born.

2. Now what about those wise men?

a. The Bible does not say there was three wise men does it? Now I know they gave three gifts but that does mean there must have been three of them. My mom gave me two presents last year but that does not mean my mom is two does it? That just does not make sense.

b. Now did those wise men visit Jesus in the stable with the shepherds? Well if you read what Matthew says, “After coming into the HOUSE they saw the child with Mary…” Matthew 2.11.

Conclusion

1. The Bible does not say we should celebrate Jesus’ birthday and it does not even tell us the date Jesus was born. Now if it was so important for us to do that then don’t you think the Bible would tell us when Jesus was born and how we should celebrate?

2. The nativity scenes we see on Christmas cards and those plays you go and watch are wrong as well because the wise men did not see him in the stable because it was in a house. And there were not three of them. My auntie wrote to me and she says about my daddy, “Oh, he preached a lesson about the three wise men.” But I knew she was just trying to trick me by saying that. It is like when people say that Eve at “the apple”, well, it does not say it was an apple does it? So we have to be careful that we teach what the Bible says.

3. But I think you can still celebrate Christmas but celebrate it like you do Thanksgiving.

So now make sure you study about this for yourself before Christmas comes.
