Children Obey Your Parents
by Becky Rene
1. This is a lesson about obeying your parents.
2. This is a lesson for all children whether you are young or old.
I. Some Things That Parents Should Know
A. If you have children then they are a heritage of the Lord.
"Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward." (Psalms 127:3 NASBR)
1. That word ‘heritage’ means ‘an inheritance’ and it means that children are a gift from God (See Genesis 33:5).
2. It also says that children are a reward and that means, you have been given children because you are serving God.
"Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine Within your house, Your children like olive plants Around your table. Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed Who fears the LORD." (Psalms 128:3-4 NASBR)
B. So if children are a gift from God then parents should treasure them and look after them properly.
1. Parents should know how to give good things to their children:
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!" (Matthew 7:11 NASBR)
2. Children are more important than anything else:
"And He answered and said, It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." (Matthew 15:26 NASBR)
3. Parents should provide things for their children:
"Here for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I do not seek what is yours, but you; for children are not responsible to save up for {their} parents, but parents for their children." (2 Corinthians 12:14 NASBR)
4. Parents should not tell their children off for no reason because they might become unhappy:
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart." (Colossians 3:21 NASBR)
5. Parent should bring up their children properly and teach them about the Lord:
"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4 NASBR)
II. What Children Have To Do
A. Children should obey their parents
1. Because it is right (Ephesians 6:1) and it pleases God (Colossians 3:20).
2. We should be obedient even when they are not watching us.
"Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:" (Colossians 3:22 KJV)
a. That word ‘eyeservice’ means not only when you are being watched.
b. I know this is talking about servants but I think God want us to be obedient to our parents all the time as well.
B. Children should look after their parents when they get old (when they are 60 year old maybe).
1. Our parents have done a lot for us because they brought us up and gave us all that we needed.
2. So when they get old we should look after them as well.
Summary
1. Parent should treasure and look after their children because they are an inheritance from God.
2. Children should obey their parents all the time because that is what God wants.
