Being an Obedient Daughter

by Becky Rene

Introduction

1. Just look at all those bad girls, they are very rebellious and they argue with their parents all the time.

2. This makes their parents very sad and even those bad girls are not very happy.

3. So this lesson is all about how we can be happy at home.

Body

I. What Parents Have to Do.

A. God says that parents have to bring their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord – Ephesians 6.4.

1. Parents have to discipline their Children because they have foolishness in the heart (the children not the parents) – Proverbs 22.15. Now they have to start disciplining their children from very young because if they leave it to late then there will be no hope – Proverbs 19.18.

a. Can you think of some times when your parents punished you? I bet you deserved to be punished didn’t you?

b. When I was 10, I threw some soda all over a boy and it soaked him. I did that because he took my doll. Now when mom found that out she spanked me and said it was bad to do that. Well I did not like being spanked but I deserved it after doing that didn’t I?

2. If our parents do not discipline us children then we will end up as bad girls but if they discipline us then we will end up being good girls – Proverbs 22.6 – that is because discipline removes the foolishness – Proverbs 22.15.

B. Now why do think parents discipline us?

1. It is because they love us, and if they do not discipline us then it means they hate us – Proverbs 13.24. If you have children then what will you do when they are naughty? Well if you do not punish them then it means you do not love them.

2. Our parents discipline us because if they do not then we will grow up to be bad girls (like the ones we saw in the mall) and this will bring shame on the parents because all those other parents that seem them being bad will say, “Oh, look at those bad girls, their parents must be bad parents to let them behave like that’ – Proverbs 29.15.

a. So when you are rebellious you are bringing shame on your parents. You do not really want to do that do you?

b. My mom says she is proud of me because I am a well behaved girl and even my daddy says he is proud of me because I am an obedient daughter.

3. Our parents discipline us because that is what God says they must do and the bible says that if we love God then we will keep his commandments – John 14.15.

C. The bible says that parents have to save up for their children – 2 Corinthians 12.14; Proverbs 13.22. I suppose that would be for things like college, a car, and things like that. Maybe you need to show your parents these scriptures. But I do not think they would save up for you if you were a bad girl would they?

This is all we are studying today and we will study about what children have to do tomorrow.

II. What Children Have to Do.

A. Did you know that God speaks to children as well and not just adults?

1. This what God says:

a. God tells us to be obedient to our parents – Ephesians 6.1; Colossians 3.20.

b. God tells us to reverence our parents. That word ‘reverence’ means ‘respect,’ so we must respect our parents - Leviticus 19.3; Ephesians 6.2.

c. God tells us to listen to our father’s instruction and our mother’s teaching – Proverbs 1.8; 6.20.

2. So we have to listen to what our parents teach us, we have to be obedient, and we have to respect them. But now this is the really hard part…

a. You have to be obedient even when your parents cannot see you – Ephesians 6.5-8. Now I know that is talking about slaves but it is a principle that is the same for everyone. Now my daddy lives in England but I am still obedient to him and he cannot even see me. Now if you do not believe me you can ask my mom, and even Rachel will tell you that is true.

b. And we even have to be obedient if they are bad parents (my parents are good) – 1 Peter 2.18. That is talking about slaves again but the same is true for us children. Now that would be hard to do but that is what it says.

B. Why do we have to be so good?

1. Because that is what God tells us to do and if we love him then we will do what he says – John 14.15.

2. Because God says it is right – Ephesians 6.1.

3. Because then we will be happy – Ephesians 6.3.

4. Because even Jesus was obedient to his parents – Luke 2.51.

5. Because if you are disobedient then you will have your eyes pecked out by birds and you would not want that would you? – Proverbs 30.17.

Summary

1. Parents have to bring their children up in the nurture and instruction of the Lord and even save up for them to go to college, and children have to show the proper respect for their parents (even bad parents), listen to what they say, and be obedient.

2. If we are obedient daughters then God says we will make our parents proud and we will be happy and we will even go to heaven.

Now you can ask questions.
