Are You Seeking?
July 10, 2005
Are you looking for something? Are you seeking? Are you a serious seeker? We sometimes have people that look at our homes, and then we do a quick review with the one who showed the home, and sometimes we get this comment, “Oh, they’re just looking.” The implication is that the looking is the end in itself. They really don’t intend to buy a home, or do anything beyond just looking.
In Mat 6:33, Jesus said, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Our question this morning is this, “Are you a seeker?” How important is it to be a seeker? What Does the Bible say about being a seeker?
I. Jesus spoke of seeking.
A. Seek first the kingdom
Mat 6:33, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
B. He encouraged us to seek that we might find.
(Mat 7:7-8 NKJV) "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. {8} "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened
1. Seek what? – Seek God.
2. But Jesus went beyond just looking: He said, “knock, and it will be opened to you.”
a. We need to be looking for a relationship with God.
b. He speaks of our communing with Him.
(Rev 3:20 NKJV) "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
3. The wicked do not bother to seek for God.
(Psa 10:4) The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.
C. Jesus spoke of the merchant man who was seeking goodly pearls.
(Mat 13:45 NKJV) "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 "who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
1. This parable speaks of a price to pay, sold all that he had.
2. Do we pay the price for Bible study and knowledge?
D. Jesus spoke of living by the word of God.
(Mat 4:3-4 NKJV) Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." {4} But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
II. How do we seek God?
A. We seek Him through our personal study and meditation.
(Psa 1:1-2 NKJV) Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; {2} But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
B. Those of Berea were commended for their search of the scriptures.
(Acts 17:11-12 NKJV) These [those of Berea] were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. {12} Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. .
1. “They received the word with all readiness” – they listened.
2. They “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”
a. Do we search and compare what we hear with what the Bible says?
b. Do we search out our own teaching and understand why we believe what we do?
C. Paul encouraged the Philippians to work out their salvation.
(Phil 2:12 NKJV) Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
1. The responsibility is ours.
2. It has to be our faith, not mom and dad’s faith.
3. “With fear and trembling” – you better be right! Your eternity depends on your being right with God!
D. The importance of knowing God is underlined by Paul as he wrote to the church at Thessalonica.
(2 Th 1:7-8 NKJV) and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, {8} in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. And as he spoke on Mars Hill.
(Acts 17:27 NKJV) "so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope1 for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
1to manipulate, i.e. verify by contact; fig. to search for:--feel after, handle, touch.
E. We seek God by growing in our knowledge of God.
(2 Pet 3:17-18 NKJV) You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; {18} but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
I. What will you do when you find Him?
A. The man who found the treasure sold all he had and bought it.
(Mat 13:44 NKJV) "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
II. What about you? What’s He worth to you?
A. Is He worth seeking?
B. Is He worth living for?
