Preparing to enter the Promised Land

In our last lesson, we concluded

with the death of Moses with these thoughts.

(Num 27:12 NKJV)  Now the LORD said to Moses: "Go up into this Mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel.

(Deu 32:49 NKJV)  "Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession;

(Deu 34:5) So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. {6} And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day. {7} Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished. (Deu 34:8 NKJV)  And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended.

We begin our study tonight with the end Deuteronomy

(Deu 34:9-12 NKJV)  Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Even so, Not another prophet like Moses!

(Deu 34:10) But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses,

whom the LORD knew face to face,

{11} in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt,

before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land,

{12} and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

(Deu 18:15 NKJV)  "The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,

Notice how exactly the book of Joshua picks up where we ended with Deuteronomy

(Josh 1:1-9 NKJV)  After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying: {2} "Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them; the children of Israel. {3} "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.

The boundaries of the land are set forth

Land which they never fully took.

(Josh 1:4) "From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

It was a great promise, but they never took all the land that God had promised them.

This is what they were promised

This is what they took.

Had they taken the land that God gave them, would the events of today be different?  Look at Syria, Jordan, and Iraq.

(Josh 1:5) "No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. {6} "Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. {7} "Only be strong and very courageous,

Notice that phrase: "Be strong and of good courage!  It’s what there forefathers didn’t have.  They didn’t have the faith to do what God told them to do.

How many times are we told to be strong and of good courage?

(1 Cor 16:13 KJV)  Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

(1 Cor 16:13 NKJV)  Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

(Eph 6:13-14 NKJV)  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {14} Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

Notice how bravery and righteousness are linked together in the same passage.

(Josh 1:5) [cont.] that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. {8} "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. {9} "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

The need of courage is stated again as the Bible closes:

(Rev 21:8 KJV)  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

the fearful and murderers go to the same place?

But look at the larger phase:

  “But the fearful, and unbelieving,”

These two go together, that’s part of the reason that being fearful is so bad—it is unbelief!

Being fearful is also bad because of what it does:  It freezes us into inactivity.

Look at Israel today.  It is still suffering because their forefathers were lazy, or afraid, or for whatever reason—they never took the land God told them they could have.

Now back to the book of Joshua

(Josh 1:10-18 NKJV)  Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, {11} "Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, 'Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess.'"

Can you imagine what was going through their minds:  Forty years, and now it’s three days!

A Reminder to those who were going to stay on the east side of the Jordan:

(Josh 1:12) And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying, {13} "Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, 'The LORD your God is giving you rest and is giving you this land.' {14} "Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you shall pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valor, and help them, {15} "until the LORD has given your brethren rest, as He gave you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the LORD your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord's servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sunrise." {16} So they answered Joshua, saying, "All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.

(Josh 1:17) "Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the LORD your God be with you, as He was with Moses. {18} "Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage."

Only be strong and of good courage."

This chapter ends on that note.

Look at the themes of the chapter:

{6} "Be strong and of good courage,

{8} "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

{16} "All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.

Great ingredients for Success—then and now!
